About Us
Range Mental Health Center
Serving comprehensive care to northern Minnesota.
Established in 1961, Range Mental Health Center (RMHC) was the first rural community mental health center in the United States and the first in Minnesota to provide services developed specifically for persons with serious and persistent mental illness. RMHC was the 16th federally designated community mental health center in the nation.
We provide mental health services to more than 2,500 adults, children, and families annually. The service area of RMHC covers northern St. Louis County, and expands for more than 6,800 square miles.
With a workforce of about 150 people, RMHC continues its 60+ years as a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing comprehensive integrated behavioral health care services to the citizens of northern Minnesota thereby helping people reach and maintain productive and dignified lives.
We Are A CCBHC
RMHC earned Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) status in May 2023. Led by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), CCBHCs were created to transform mental health and substance use treatment across the country and provide sustainable funding for robust community outpatient mental health treatment.
As a CCBHC, we ensure access to a comprehensive range of services, providing care coordination when needed and incorporating evidence-based practices and other supports based on a community needs assessment. Equally important, CCBHCs are required to serve anyone who requests care for mental health or substance use disorders — regardless of their ability to pay, place of residence, or age, including developmentally appropriate care for children and youth — which RMHC has long practiced.
