History
The building is named after Rudolph George “Rudy” Perpich Sr., who was born June 27, 1928, in Carson Lake outside of Hibbing. Following college, he ran a dental office in Hibbing from 1954 to 1974. He made the jump from local (school board) to state politics when he won a seat in the State Senate, serving from 1963 to 1971.
In 1970, Perpich ran for lieutenant governor, won and served under DFL Gov. Wendell Anderson. He was voted out of office in 1978, only to return to run for governor in 1982. Against the odds, Perpich won the office, making him the first Minnesota governor to serve non-consecutive terms and the first with a female lieutenant governor. In 1990, Perpich ran for an unprecedented third term but lost.
